- One Resolution is Plenty
There’s no need to be over ambitious. If you intend to modify your lifestyle for the better, your chances of success are greater if you focus on just one element of your life. Don’t run before you can walk! If your initial resolution ends in success, there is then potential to think about making another lifestyle change. - Planning Makes Perfect
Take some time out to review your life and pin point what it is you really want to achieve…and not on New Year’s Eve! Decisions such as this cannot be made at the last minute as successful completion may require resources, whether it be a new pair of running trainers or a nicotine patch hoard. If you have all of the required amenities, there can be no excuse for failure! - Realism is Key
This applies firstly to when selecting your resolution, as unrealistic resolutions are more inclined to lead to frustration and negligence. Secondly, to the speed in which you expect to see results, it is crucial not to pack it in if you do not see instantaneous results. Remember, your resolution should be viewed as a marathon, not a sprint! - Activate a Reward System
Rewards can be the driving force in achieving your resolution. At first, when sticking to your resolution is most challenging, rewards can be relatively regular in order to develop an association between fulfillment of your goals and rewards. In time, the necessity of these rewards will become less frequent. Rewards can come in a variety of forms, from a catch up with a motivational friend, to a relished activity.
